want to know me better?

well...i was tagged or something a long time ago by my sister to write down 25 random facts about myself. (i think thats what it was) so i decided to let you guys get to know the real Kate Hawkley...
1) I got i a really bad car accident 2 summers ago. I was driving on the freeway after work heading for the spectrum, driving my grandparents oldsmobile minding my own business, when all of the sudden this blue sports car cuts me off. I slammed on my brakes, spun around 3 times, hit an old man behind me, hit a pole and flew off the side of the 5 freeway onto the EL Toro onramp…should have had some serious injuries, but was able to drive away from it without a scratch. MIRACLE
2) i dont like feet...but im getting better
3) Whenever I take roadtrips by myself I sing out loud the whole time so that I stay awake…one time I was driving home from Idaho (14 hours straight) and lost my voice by the time I made it home
4) All of my embarrassing moments have to do with falling, but this one is my favorite. One day in Idaho I was scapping off my car, which is an everyday event in Idaho and it was after class, I was parked in the front row right by the taylor. While I was scrapping I fell and a bunch of people were walking around at that time and I didn’t want them to see me, so for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to just slide under my car and wait for the crowd to pass. But, of course some good mormon boy saw me and came over and said, “um, excuse me, do you need help?” It was really embarrassing, but funny now that I think about it.
5) I loved high school!! Everything about it, sometimes I wish that I could replay certain days.
6) When I was in first grade I remember there was this thing called scholastic books, it was a magazine were you would order books. I always wanted to get stuff from it, by I never really did. But I remember there was this one boy who went to Europe for like a week and he bought a bunch of books and they were sitting in his cubby forever and so I just took them. And never told anyone. When he finally came back he was crying cause he wanted his books, but I never told him…I feel really bad about it now! Oops..
7) I hate people who you know know you but they pretend like they don’t and just walk by you without saying hello.
8) my mom told me that when I was little and we would go to stores I would just sit in the stroller and say hello to anyone and everyone.
9) When im not thinking about anything I count my steps and give myself goals when walking…example “take five steps to the tree…etc”
10) I once dyed my hair dark brown and immediately regretted the decision right when I did it. My hair will never be the same. Nobody recognized me, I even heard some girls talking about me in the library one day and I was sitting right next to them…luckily they were saying something nice
11) Anything outdoors makes me happy. I cant spend too much time inside
12) when im driving and a good song is on the radio and I have already reached my destination. Ill sit in my car and wait until its over.
13) I have only gotten 1 detention, 2 lunch detentions and 1 Saturday school. I got the Saturday school because me and two of my girlfriends ditched school and walked to the Laguna Hills mall and spent all day there. We thought we got away with it, but turns out we didn’t.
14) i think its so funny when i see people on bikes or just walking around and they are singing to themselves
15) sometimes when im driving i have this urge to run into things (i'll never do it!!)
16) I have had about 9 perms in my lifetime
17) i love to cuddle!!!
18) i love to run. i ran a marathon once. 26.4 miles...and plan on doing more. also Pehrson and i want to attempt a triathalon this summer.
19) when i was younger my mom said that she would come into my room and i would just be staring at myself in the mirror...for hours...
20) i once got frost bite on my toes in idaho. well, it was the "first stages" but still my toes looked like frozen chicken and felt like it too.
21) my dad said that if there was a major for socializing i would get a 5.0 because i love meeting new people
22) i spoke at my high school graduation with one of my best friends, tyler gardner
23) i got 100% attendance all 4 years of seminary just like my siblings, im NOT saying this to brag i just can't believe i got up that early every morning.
24) i was a cheerleader for byu-idaho my freshmen year, and thought it was one of the funniest things i've ever done. we cheered, in uniforms, for intermural games and some of the girls were SO hardcore about it.
25) i LOVE being in LOVE!!!! marriage is the best thing ever!!

man...that was really fun! i could probably do another 25, but i don't want to bore you guys. haha hope you enjoy. I'm not gonna tag anyone in particular, but if you want to do it, i think you should!

Lieutenant Hawkley

So, most of you know Pehrson got into dental school at USC (University of Southern California) we are really excited to start dental school and live in california. As you also may know, dental school is VERY VERY expensive. On average dental students come out of school $200,000 to $300,000 in debt. Which is crazy to me, but happens ALL the time. So, luckily my husband is a genius and found out that there are scholarships that you can get through the air force. His dad was in the air force, my grandpa was in the air force, there are a lot of good benefits and great people that come out of there. Good news, they pay for all of dental school give you a little money to live off each month and when you are done with school you have to go work as a dentist on the air force base. So, 4 years of school=4 years in the air force. Then you are free to go open you own practice. Sounds smart to me. NO DEBT!!! that will be awesome!

And today is the day that Pehrson gets commissioned into the air force. We are going down to the Hickham Air Force Base in honolulu and they are doing like a big ceremony for him. He is a little nervous to join the air force, but we both feel like it is going to be a huge blessing for us and our future family. His title today will be Lieutenant Hawkley! =]

So Proud of my MAN!!!

But, this morning i got a red rose, dark chocolate (my favorite) and the sweetest poem i've ever read! whoever said marriage is hard is a liar...because i am having the time of my life! I love being in love. Hope everyone had a great Valentines Day! Love you!

no trespassing!

We went to the big island this last weekend. We found some cheap tickets and just decided that we should go. A bunch of people came and it was so fun. Way different than i ever expected hawaii to be like. Some parts of it made me feel like i was back in Idaho, lots of cows and fields and horses and then 20 minutes down the road we would driving through a beautiful rain forest, then 20 more minutes we were looking at a volcano, and if we looked up the mountain we would see snow on the tip. It was nutz! Every single rental car on the island was sold that weekend and so Pehrson found some random guy who referred us to another guy and we got a car. It worked out great and we made some new friends. =]

one morning at 3 am pehrson, myself, marc and natalie decided that we wanted to sneak pass some gates that said "no trespassing" and see the lava up close. We had some friends who have done it before so we knew that it was okay.

im going to try and explain to you what i saw, but you probably wont really understand the extremity of it until you actually experience it for yourself.

we talked to a couple of rangers who told us that it is pretty unsafe to go out to the lava right now and if you get caught its a $5000 fine. there was a break in the lava "aka a bench" that was going to fall off into the ocean at any given time. SO WHY DID WE DO THIS YOU ASK??? good question im not sure but it was truly one of the scariest things i have ever done in my life, my heart was beating so hard that i thought it was going to burst.

So the 4 of us journey out there walking over these huge piles of dried lava, with flashlights and the red glow in the distance slowly getting closer and closer to us. We said a quick prayer apologizing for our stupidity and making sure we would be safe. We kept walking closer, the glow was mesmerizing, i felt like a bug attracted to the light. i just felt my legs walking closer. once we got like a hundred feet away the ground felt different all of us noticed and the lava was crumbling under our feet. (This is where the heart starts beating fast) i guess there is a layer of lava that has air bubbles and it dries over the already hard lava, so when we would take a step it would break and then it was really hard right below. As we got closer the smell of sulfur was stronger and there was steam coming from below our feet. We stopped there for a while and just looked at the smoke and red glow. it was a very erie feeling, it felt like we were on another planet. We all felt really good about our view there and didn't want to get any closer because we just didnt feel good about it. All the sudden we see these 2 flashlights walking towards us. i thought oh no, we are caught, we are gonna have to pay $5000! but they got closer and it was the guys we needed to see...GEOLOGISTS! this guy takes pictures for some magazines and knows everything there is to know about lava. He started talking to us about the lava and then goes..."actually you are standing exactly over a lava tube!" the lava was flowing under our feet! (once again...heart pounding!) All the sudden we saw an explosion! the lava was spraying out of the tube probably like 15-20 ft up in the air. It was AMAZING! the photographer goes..."i need to get out there!" and looks at the guys and says come on you made it this far, just come. Natalie and i stayed back while we watched our boys get closer to the boiling hot lava. (my heart pounding even more) the explosions continued and we were just standing there in amazement. we were watching the earth be created right in front of our eyes. while the boys were following this guy he told them that if you hear any crackling or loud noises...JUST RUN! DROP EVERYTHING AND RUN! thats how intense it is. they finally came back to us and i held on to Pehrson as tight as i could so happy that he was back in my arms. We ran back to the car because we wanted to get back before it was light so we didnt get caught. as we all sat in the car together we just looked at each other and couldn't really say anything but...WOW! we saw LAVA...2000 degree, boiling hot lava, flowing down a hill into the ocean!

this was not an everyday event. i am just so glad to be alive and to witness God's beautiful creation. It is absolutely amazing!! We all feel very lucky to have seen those geologists when we did. when i think about it it still feels unreal to me and im sure that it might not even sound scary to you, but trust me...IT WAS! something i will never ever forget!

but our trip was so fun and stay tuned cause pictures are on the way!
